Swedish Army Trangia

Swedish army surplus seems to have been flooding on to the market for the last few years.   Being next to the Soviet Union and wary of their neighbours the wiley Swedes stockpiled military supplies for may years, now they seem to be clearing the cupboards.

This particular piece of kit is widely available through army surplus stores.   It may or may not be made by Trangia. Mine is marked as being made by Svea.   They are available from about a tenner up to about £20.00 (priced in2005). Shop around.   My own set has aluminium mess tins, they're also available in stainless steel. (I've haven't seen a stainless steel set.)

Contains:

  • Integrated wind-shield and pot-stand
  • Meths / Alcohol burner
  • Plastic fuel bottle
  • Shallow mess tin / frying pan / lid
  • Deep mess tin

The Noodle Maker!

This set is more robust than the normal Trangias and consequently quite heavy.

  • 0.890 Kgs Without fuel.
  • 1.170 Kgs With a full fuel bottle
  • 1.230 Kgs With full fuel bottle and filled burner

When comparing weights remember; figures given for most stoves do not include fuel bottles or pots and pans!

The burner is larger than the normal Trangia unit and perhaps less fuel efficient.   However, in use it seems to work extremely well, boiling 2 cups of water in about 7 minutes on a mild spring day.

I bring this stove with me on solo fishing trips though I leave it in the back of the car, it's a bit too heavy to carry all day.   It will, without fail, provide me with a cup of tea at lunchtime, allow me to heat some soup and make me another cup of tea before I climb into the car and go home.   Usually on one fill of the burner.   I've also made noodles and pasta in the large mess tin and fried an egg and a couple of sausages in the lid!

My cup, teabags and little bottle for milk, are all conveniently stored inside.   My knife fork spoon and lighter fit too.   Neat, tidy, quiet, and easy to use.

Please Note: It's unlikely that you'll be able to buy spares for this kit, although the ordinary Trangia burner does well enough in place of the one supplied.

This is a very useful and inexpensive piece of kit it's only drawbacks being it's weight and on occasion it's shape.   I hope to place a link on the page soon with a number of suggestions for it's use.
